I enjoy hearing the latest celebrity gossip as much as the next person, but when this gossip becomes headline news in the media, there is something wrong with people who are producers and newscasters. There is still a war, people are dying in the Middle East, the economy is again shaky, so what do people care about: Britney is requiring all her dancers to submit to random drug tests.
A few months ago I met international journalists in one of my communication classes. They said they were turned off by the American press system because all we cover is national news and celebrity news. After hearing this, it made me ashamed to be pursuing in a career that does not focus on real news half the time. As supposedly one of the leading nations in the world, we should be covering international news. It is imperative to understand and know what is happening outside the U.S. borders. These journalists were from third-world countries that had more international news coverage than America.
For a long time America has been the lead power in everything, but even the top dog needs to learn tricks to stay ahead of the competition. The U.S. can't rely on its reputation for being the best; it's time to start proving it again.
